Summary:
Affordable heating and cooling of buildings has been identified as a key focus area of research under the Mission Innovation initiative. As such, there has been an increasing push from the government and industry to make a shift from conventional refrigerants id est HFCs to more climate friendly refrigerants such as CO2, Ammonia, HFOs, and Hydrocarbons. On the technology prototype development and demonstration front, a lot of progress has happened in the last few years. Some of these technologies calibrated and benchmarked for Indian conditions have also been developed. However, barring a few instances, the uptake and deployment-at-scale of these technologies have not really taken place till now. This paper will take stock of the challenges and shortcomings in terms of technology development-deployment that we still have to overcome, as well as the ideal policy landscape which can facilitate the mainstreaming of alternative refrigerant technologies
