Summary:
Road Load parameters (rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag)of a vehicle have strong impact on overall Vehicle Emissions andFuel Economy. The road load coefficients are simulated on chassisdynamometer to carryout emission and fuel economy measurement andare hence required to be found beforehand. A realistic measure ofroad load parameters can be obtained by conducting a coastdowntest. Coastdown test results are hugely impacted by variousenvironmental parameters like ambient temperature, atmosphericpressure, wind speed et cetera Though performed in standard boundaryconditions, results of multiple tests performed on a vehicle varyfrom one another due to variations in the mentioned environmentalparameters over and above standard test to test variation. Thispaper aims at studying the variation in test results due to ambienttemperature as one of the parameters responsible. For this study, road load coefficients from more than 100 coastdown tests conductedon oval test track for almost 30 vehicles from multiple segmentsare considered. Through this study, an attempt has been made tobuild a correlation between ambient temperature and test resultsto analyse the test to test variation. This study can further beextended to predict the road load of a vehicle at different ambienttemperature based on test results of the same vehicle in standardor known ambient temperature conditions
