- Summary:
- Commercial transport airplane technology is moving toward a next generation More Electric Airplanes (MEA) in order to further improve airplane performance and efficiency. Electricity is seeing increased use for power generation, transmission and energy storage in place of less efficient pneumatics and hydraulics. The MEA is also a technology enabler for new more environmentally friendly electrical generation and storage devices such as fuel cells, batteries and super capacitors. Successful use of these new technologies requires systematically analyzing the interface of these technologies with each other, and with other systems that impact overall airplane performance, efficiency, weight and reliability. In this paper, incremental changes in the airplane electrical power system will be analyzed. With each of these changes, the benefit to the electrical power system and the impact that each change has on airplane weight and engine power extraction will be analyzed. Using this data, overall airplane weight and efficiency will be determined. Metrics will be calculated for these changes to determine fuel burn improvements utilizing information on engine efficiency and the Breguet range equation. Issues of performance, reliability, and power quality will also be considered.Changes that will be examined include the addition of fuel cells and batteries for power generation and energy storage as well as changes in electrical conversion devices. The way electrical load analysis for airplanes is accomplished will be analyzed to identify potential reductions in the ratings of generation and storage devices. The criticality of some electrical loads will be considered to identify opportunities for more optimal placement in the electrical power system architecture. The implementation of electrical actuation will also be examined. These incremental changes and their impact on airplane efficiency will be incorporated into an example system architecture along with cumulative qualitative impacts resulting from each of these changes. This will show how these incremental changes and architectural improvements will provide the efficiency and other improvements necessary to result in a successful future MEA
