PN Emission Measurements and Real-Driving-Emissions (RDE) Simulation on China 6 Light-Duty Gasoline Vehicles Corning Incorporated

- As the China 6 light duty vehicle emission regulation penetrating, particulate number (PN) becomes a challenge for vehicle after-treatment system (both gasoline-fueled and diesel-fueled powered). WLTC has replaced NEDC as the Type I test cycle on Chassis Dyno with more dynamic driving events. What's more, instead of the WLTC test in laboratory, the on-road RDE test, defined as the Type II test in China 6 regulation, brings much more difficulties to elaborate engine calibration for OEMs due to its natural uncertainties. In response to China6 requirements, appropriate technologies have been applied by OEMs, such as gasoline particulate filter (GPF) and higher rail-pressure injection system (e.g. 350bar system). It should be noted that, vehicles for the WLTC test could be well run-in by OEMs with proper mileage. However, the COP (Conformity of Production) test requires new produced vehicles to meet the China6 PN limit as well within regulation allowed limited run-in mileage. Therefore, the COP test becomes another concern for OEMs about the PN emission control.In this study, we pulled several new China6 gasoline vehicles for emission test survey. The tested vehicles covered typical engine technologies including GDI/MPI and Turbo Charged/Natural Aspiration. On one hand, we can build insight into the status of China6 engine emission control level through WLTC and RTS95 tests. On the other hand, a method to generate an RDE surrogate cycle was introduced based on the WLTC and RTS95 testing data. This method could be used to evaluate the vehicle RDE PN emission by a quick modeling approach and help to predict the vehicle emission performance after the RDE compliance in future
