- Summary:
- There has been a significant increase - both in the content ofelectronics and software in vehicles as well as recallsattributed to these components and systems. The advanced featuresincluding the onset of autonomous vehicles accompanied by millionsof lines of code in software has exponentially increased thecomplexity of vehicle systems and many of the safety analysistechniques being used to identify hazards and safety requirements(e.g. FMEA, FTA, ETA et cetera) were invented years before the existenceof complexities of such magnitude. This paper examines a new hazardidentification technique formalized by Nancy G Leveson of MIT, USAin her book "Engineering a Safer World" and furtherelaborated in the STPA Handbook co-authored with John P Thomas inMarch 2018. This paper explains how STPA technique could beeffectively used to comply with ISO 26262 in various phases of the"V" lifecycle of product development and later duringproduction, operation, service and decommissioning. It isinteresting to note that although STPA is referenced in theStandard for Safety for the Evaluation of Autonomous Products, UL4600, the ISO 26262:2018 standard second edition makes no explicitreference to this technique although it allows practitioners to useany suitable technique so long as evidence can be provided that theobjectives of the applicable clauses are met. Some reference(s) toprior work in this context will also be provided. Key topicsaddressed include: a) Brief introduction to various safety analysistechniques including STPA b) Overview of STPA methodology c) Howdoes STPA inputs and outputs interface with work products of ISO26262 d) Benefits and Potential applications of STPA e) Summary andconclusion"
