- Summary:
- The evolution of engine technology has so far seen the mostbeneficial side of progress in the fields of transportation, agriculture and mobility. With the advent of innovation, there isalso an impact on our environment that needs to be balanced. Thisis where fuels like CNG, LPG, LNG, et cetera outperform the conventionalfossil fuels in terms of pollution and operational cost. Thispaper enlightens on the use of innovative dual fuel technologywhere diesel and CNG fuels are used for combustion simultaneouslyinside the combustion chamber. Dual fuel system adaptation for farmapplication ensures self-reliance of the farmer where he cangenerate bio-CNG to use the renewable fuel for farming making himless dependent on conventional fossil fuel thus promoting a greeneconomy. The dual fuel system is adapted on the existing in-usediesel engine with minimum modifications. This makes it feasible toretro-fit a CNG fuel system on existing diesel engine so as tooperate it on dual fuel mode. Major benefits of dual fuel systeminclude better operational costs than pure diesel mode along withdiesel replacements of around 40% without any change in theexisting diesel fuel supply system with substantial reduction insmoke and PM emissions. However, minor modifications in exhaustafter treatment system are required to be made for compliance ofNOx and NMHC emissions. The existing performance of base dieselengine is retained in dual fuel mode with improvement in fueleconomy. Thus making this dual fuel technology affordableespecially for Indian agriculture sector.
