Summary:
The small commercial vehicles are the drivers of a major part of India's indirect economy, providing the most efficient means of transport for last mile. Evidently, the competition for the market share in this segment is increasing, with Tata Motors leading the way. With the introduction of BS6 norms, some major overhauls have been done to the small commercial vehicle models, making them even better. One of them is the improvement in NVH refinement, which is aimed at maximizing driver comfort. This paper explains the challenges of higher tactile vibrations , higher in cab noise and solutions provided to improve driver comfort in the Tata Motors small commercial vehicles without compromising the other performance attributes like total cost of ownership, fuel economy, ease of servicing and cost effectiveness . With universal truth that for two cylinder engines with 360 degree phase crankshaft configuration, naturally aspirated common rail diesel engine, with more power and torque, it was expected to have higher unbalanced forces in turn resulting in higher tactile vibrations as well as in cab noise. This problem was overcome through innovative balancing strategy and mount configuration for addressing the tactile vibrations. We could reduce the cost, at the same time balancer shaft was avoided. There was a reduction of >70% in Idle DSR vibrations. Additionally the vehicle In cab noise was refined by using mass damper tuned to specific frequencies a first such use in the small commercial vehicle segment in India, resulting reduction of overall Incab Noise by 3 dB(A)This innovative solutions resulted in targeted NVH performance with targeted other performance attributes ensuring the leadership position of TML for NVH refinement as well as simplicity in design which in turn resulted in lower cost of ownership and cost effectiveness
