- In the recent years, the interest in heavy-duty engines powered with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is increasing due to the necessity to comply with the stringent CO2 limitation imposed by the European Commission. Indeed, the reduced number of carbon atoms of the NG molecule allows to reduce the CO2 emissions with respect to a conventional fuel, persevering the engine performance. To support the engine development and reduce its time-to-market, numerical analysis can be used for virtual design of the engine or of the vehicle (heavy-duty and bus), thanks to their low computational time.The present work is focused on experimental and numerical investigation of a turbocharged heavy-duty SI engine fuelled with CNG. In a first stage, an extensive experimental campaign of the engine under study was carried out at various speeds and loads, in which global engine performance and cylinder pressure traces were recorded and analysed. Subsequently, a 1D model of the tested engine is implemented in a commercial modelling framework and integrated with "in-house development" submodels for the description of in-cylinder phenomena, such as combustion, turbulence and heat transfer. The schematization of the turbocharger system, intake and exhaust piping were firstly validated, applying for the combustion description the heat release curve obtained from an inverse thermodynamic analysis. Once ensured the consistency of the 1D engine schematization, a direct computation of the combustion was carried out by the adopted phenomenological model.The proposed numerical approach shows the ability to simulate the experimental data with good accuracy, in terms of both performance and main combustion events. The model demonstrates to correctly describe the behaviour of an engine fuelled with CNG in the whole operating plane, without requiring a case-dependent tuning
