- Using rivets to join the metal (sheet metal) parts has always been commonplace, not only in aero space but also in automotive industries. In order to have a rivet joint work properly upon assembly, It is a common practice that the rivet shank has to be radially expended and fit tightly with the holes of the jointed components (usually sheet metal or plate), under tremendous pressing loads on it. When the material around these holes are insufficient due probably to the design limitation, the deformation, as the direct result of the riveting force, may be severe enough to induce high stress on those parts. It is very important and interesting to use numeric methods to simulate the riveting process and predict whether the stressed parts will be sustainable in the process. Considered in this work are fairly detailed configurations of the riveted assembly, in their practical geometric shape as well as in the material characteristics routinely utilized in product designs. Some of the characters for the plates to be riveted are accounted for by modeling them as bi-layered structures whose harnesses are dramatically different. The primary interests in this study are to determine the stress on the riveted plates during the riveting and after riveting tools are removed. There are a few interesting case studies showing that the stress depends on the initial clearance between the rivet shank and holes, the rivet head formed at the offsetting process, in addition to the localized topology of the geometric design. This work will be of significance so that designers will be able to foresee the strength of the riveted assembly not only at its expected load during the service (vehicle's operation) but also at the manufacturing process. It will offer a useful tool to integrate manufacturing parameters on the early phase of product design and thus make the design process more robust
