Summary:
Reduced CO2 targets, especially in real driving conditions will require further optimization of the internal combustion engine. Among other measures a variable compression ratio (VCR) system brings significant potential to reduce fuel consumption on the thermodynamic side. This paper contains a detailed description of measurement approaches that are used to support the development of AVL Dual Mode VCS and other VCR systems in fired operation. The measurement results are partly used to validate simulation tools which are intensively used during the development of those systems. Various physical values are measured in hydraulically acting systems with focus on servo valve and main actuating piston of the VCR system. A measurement linkage system for transmitting the measurement signals was developed using dynamics simulation. In addition, various methods have been established to detect real piston position with stationary sensors. Special focus is here put on the analysis of switching events as the switching time is a key aspect of VCR systems.Next to the measurement approaches itself selected measurement results and comparisons to simulations are presented. Further fields of development for using such measurement approaches are mentioned.Alternative Sessions: PFL170 or PFL510
