Summary:
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is widely being used in electric vehicle application due to high-power density and smooth speed control while accelerating as well as braking. Although having high power density and mechanical robustness, the motor faces practical limits to go beyond a certain speed. The limit point is dictated by motor electrical limitations even though the motor runs under maximum power with a field-oriented vector control (FOC). This paper highlights the power reduction phenomenon and ways of improvements if possible. In this way, it elaborates various methods of FOC and their utilization in different situation to improve speed limit and torque. Considering examples of two PMSM, all the analysis has been done with MATLAB Simulink, subsequently the simulation results have been reported to demonstrate the improvements
