Summary:
This paper describes engine sound and sound design process no research cases so far. In the making of engine sound development of a popular car, it is common to improve to satisfy customers' needs from existing cars. In sports and flagship cars, it is common to reflect the branding of each company and the ideal of the engineer in the sound. Each case has common point that the sound directionality is determined by itself clearly. However, in this way, the direction of the sound is not clear, so it is difficult to create a new or abstract concept sound by a universal process. In this paper, original abstract engine sound concept that has never been seen was tried to create with original sound design process. It is reflected the image of the sound of wood. The reason for the concept of wood is that it is an unprecedented concept. And there are research cases where nature and natural sounds have a positive effect on humans. Therefore, the authors devised a new sound design process that would be necessary to design abstract concept sounds. The original sound design process was referred from industrial styling design process. First of all, the abstract concept wood was concreted and clarified the direction of sound design by adjective verbalization. The adjective verbalization was performed by factor analysis of the results of the Semantic Differential method by the various sound hearing test. After the directionality of the sound design was decided, in order to realize it, acoustic analysis and paired comparison method was performed. Finally, the original engine sound was proved to achieve a target concept "woody engine sound" by sound hearing test and prototype car driving test. At the same time, original sound design process was clarified the usefulness
