Summary:
This paper discusses the implementation of ac-ac converter using a matrix converter. A MATLAB Simulink model of single-phase matrix converter has been developed for matrix converter with a step up and step down of input frequency. Selection of power switches differentiates the conventional cycloconverter from that of matrix converter based cycloconverter. Conventional cycloconverters requires thyristors whereas matrix converter based cycloconverter requires IGBT which is formed as a bidirectional switch module. The performance of matrix converter based cycloconverter using Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation Technique (SPWM) has been analyzed for resistive and inductive loads at varying frequency. This paper presents the output results for various frequencies such as 12.5 Hz, 25 Hz (step-down operation) and 100 Hz (step-up operation)
