Summary:
Fueling compression ignition engines with fossil fuels are spoiling the economy and environment. Also, waste plastics that are not recyclable are spoiling the land, groundwater resources, and air. This experimental study is to fuel waste plastic oil into a compression ignition engine operated under optimal operating parameters. The experiment included: Obtaining the optimal set of operating parameters by using the Taguchi method and fueling the compression ignition engine by waste plastic oil under the optimal operating parameters into the compression ignition engine under various load conditions. Also, an analysis of results obtained with that diesel. Waste plastic oil was procured from bulk manufacturing pyrolysis plants. The engine operating parameters considered in this experiment are Fuel Injection Timing (IT) 23, 26 and 29⁰ before top dead center; Nozzle opening pressure (IP) 190, 200 and 210 bar and Compression Ratio (CR) 16:1, 17.5:1 and 19:1 using L9 orthogonal array and Taguchi method. This resulted as the optimal level of operating parameters are 210 bar of nozzle opening pressure, 26⁰ before top dead center and 19:1 of compression ratio. Utilization of plastic oil under the optimal level of operating parameters produced thermal efficiency, oxides of nitrogen and smoke similar to that of diesel. Also, the ignition delay, peak in-cylinder pressure, exhaust gas temperature and emissions of hydrocarbon are found to be similar in comparison to that of diesel. This experiment saves the environment and reduces the import of crude oil by replacing the diesel 100% to fuel compression ignition engine without compromising the performance and emission characteristics
