- For many years, governments have driven the improvement of fueleconomy in transportation through tightening legislation. Thiseffort has focused on passenger cars, but is increasingly concernedwith heavy-duty vehicles (HDV). The combination of this regulatoryfocus with the ever present desire for low cost of ownership incommercial vehicles is giving increased pressure to deliver morefuel efficiency from the lubricants.In order to deliver improved fuel efficiency, suitable testmethodology is needed to give repeatable discriminatory resultsthat not only help in the advance of technology, but can alsohighlight the magnitude of the benefit expected in real-worldapplications. Typical on-road driving has significant variation infuel consumption due to driver inconsistency, changes in rollingresistance and changeable ambient conditions. In order to avoid theeffect of such variables, current practices, such as the EPASmartWay methodologies typically utilize gravimetric measurementof removable fuel tanks or more recently the possibility of usingPortable Emissions Measuring Systems (PEMS) over a set cycle.These methods do still have significant variability inherentwithin them, and, therefore an alternative methodology has beendeveloped using Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) in anoperating vehicle in order to measure fuel consumption in a morerepeatable manner. This paper describes the development processthat allows this measurement to be undertaken on a vehicle beingdriven over a set cycle and discusses benefits relative to currentmethodologies
