- Summary:
- The experimental methods focused on utilizing the newlydeveloped NOVA induction heating and hardening manufacturingprocess as an adapted method to produce high performance enginevalve springs. A detailed testing plan was used to evaluate theexpected and theorized possibility for fatigue life enhancement. Anindustry standard statistical analysis method and tools wereemployed to objectively substantiate the findings. Fatigue cycletesting using NOVA induction-hardened racing valve springs made ofultra-high tensile material were compared to data for springs withtraditional heat treatment and those with standard processing. The results were displayed using Wöhler and modified Haighfatigue life diagrams. The final analysis suggests that NOVAprocessed springs have a seemingly slight, yet significant benefitin fatigue life of 5 - 7% over springs processed through acompeting method. This improvement in fatigue life is a ratherprecious advantage when considering high performance engine valvesprings and could result in up to a 10X improvement in actualspring life, depending on the stress level of the fieldapplication
