- Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts will be used toreduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions from internalcombustion engines in a number of applications. Southwest ResearchInstitute® (SwRI)® performed an Internal Research and Developmentproject to study SCR catalyst thermal deactivation. The studyincluded a V/W/TiO₂ formulation, a Cu-zeolite formulation and anFe-zeolite formulation. This work describes NOx timedresponse to ammonia (NH₃) transients as a function of thermal agingtime and temperature. It has been proposed that the response timeof NOx emissions to NH₃ transients, effected by changesin diesel emissions fluid (DEF) injection rate, could be used as anon-board diagnostic (OBD) metric. The objective of this study wasto evaluate the feasibility and practicality of this OBD approach.While these experiments showed a noticeable trend with aging, therewere also observations and considerations that suggest thisapproach may be reasonable as a catalyst-aging evaluation testmethod, but impractical for OBD purposes
