- Summary:
- Recent developments in high-vacuum and/or inert gas brazing and diffusion bonding of titanium have contributed higher strength titanium-to-titanium joints than were previously attainable by the silver base alloy brazing techniques, and also higher strengths and corrosion resistances (to rocket engine fuels) in titanium-to-stainless steel brazed joints than previously attained by silver base alloy brazing techniques. An interesting example of the application of these advanced brazing techniques is the high-strength vacuum brazing of 6A14V titanium alloy to type 304L stainless steel for service in the Gemini capsule.Another is the vacuum pressure cladding of multilayer crack propagation-resistant 5A12.5Sn titanium alloy plates for atomic reactor applications. A further example is the solid-state diffusion bonding of 6A14V titanium alloy pressure spheres, where base metal strengths are attained in the bond zone
