- The present paper deals with the design, the development and the research work which led to a compact, light weight, high speed, high output, diesel engine. The 24 cylinders are arranged in "W" form, in three banks placed at 60 deg angles to each other. The engine has a high specific power output achieved by efficient combustion, high supercharging, and careful design of all component parts. Engine balance is excellent, internal inertia couples are very small, and the engine is practically free of torsional vibrations over the speed range. Four exhaust turbo-chargers are employed. After many experimental investigations, concerning the effect of exhaust pressure waves on engine performance, a system having comparatively constant pressure was adopted to obtain uniform and efficient scavenging of all cylinders
