- Summary:
- This paper discussed thermal loading with respect to engine temperatures and heat rejection based on purely theoretical cycle studies as well as on analysis of engine data. Data are presented for a variety of engine types and modifications, and even with variations in boost, turbo efficiency, and aftercooling, the results in terms of output, fuel consumption, maximum pressure, and heat rejection all check quite well with calculations. Theoretic and actual data show that high output engines do not necessarily involve high thermal loads, and that thermal loading may be controlled by thermodynamic design. It is also shown that arbitrary and artificial parameters such as bmep can be completely unrealistic as indicators of thermal or mechanical loading. Finally, all of the studies indicated increasing loads are associated with higher output
