Summary:
The evolution and significance of LOP is discussed. A straightforward force analysis shows that LOP is directly proportional to radial load and inversely proportional to shaft diameter and beam length. Radial load is defined and a device for measuring it is described. The need for such a precise instrument can be seen in the relationship of radial spring rate to circumferential spring rate, where KR is approximately 40 KT. It is concluded that LOP is an adequate indicator of radial load consistency for small and average size seals
