Summary:
Investigations, both theoretical and experimental, of the major factors associated with the use of disc brakes on cars are described. Dynamometer tests were derived from brake usage data and used to compare the performance of drum and disc brakes when fitted with specially designed frictional materials. Results showed that disc brakes were free from fade and gave more consistent performance; also, that the pad materials have to satisfy different requirements than the drum brake linings. A method of determining performance consistency of car brakes is outlined, demonstrating the greater stability of disc brakes.Expressions are given which enable the temperatures reached in single and repeated stops to be calculated. A theoretical analysis is also made of the cooling of discs, the behavior of different disc materials, effect of dust shields, and other related topics
