Summary:
AbstractSystem availability can be defined as the probability that a system will be available, or ready for use when demanded, where the time of demand is randomly distributed. From this definition it becomes apparent that all factors affecting the operation of the system will, in general, influence system availability. For this reason studies become intimately associated with the details of equipment, procedures, and personnel and their interactions. A number of studies have been performed at STL to evaluate system availability of USAF weapon systems, and how this relates to the over-all weapon systems capability. Stochastic models were constructed and real ICBM weapon system data employed to arrive at estimates of system availability in order to provide supporting data for the technical management of these systems. These models were broader in scope than previous developments in this area, and their results can be employed to influence the design of automatic checkout equipment for various missile and space systems
