Summary:
Gears are performing successfully on a wide range of applications on space vehicles under conditions of tooth loading, speed, or environment that would have been considered impossible 15 years ago. On the other hand, there have been many cases of premature failures of space gear equipment with the resultant extra expense and delay of programs in redesigning and improving the gearing. The pitfalls of the reliability dilemma, the hazard of space environment conditions, and the hazard of unusual vibrations are analyzed. The designer is advised to be wary in his design analysis and thorough in his development testing
