Summary:
The phrase "underwater vessel as a functional system" describes a combatant submarine. In attempting to achieve an optimum weapons system utilizing submarines, a study was made of the purpose and gains to be achieved by building a deep diving submarine. Once it has been determined that a deep diving submarine is a desirable weapons system, the next step involves designing to achieve the desired depth capability. Both of the above problems are discussed. First, the sound channel and its advantages is presented and then the advantage of depth for safety when under attack by surface ships or other submarines. Finally, the design of a hull for great depth is discussed in the area of materials and fabrication problems
