Summary:

The recent trend toward direct comparative mobility testing of military vehicles in natural environments, where performance is simultaneously affected by many, continuously varying terrain components, is reviewed. Test methods are briefly summarized and evaluated. Some of the dangers of casual testing and/or analysis are discussed, and some specific techniques designed to minimize the major difficulties are presented. The concept of examining vehicle mobility in the total environmental context is considered sound, provided the objects are sufficiently modest and clearly stated
