Summary:

The growth rate of motor common carriers of general commodities has been greatest from 19501960. Being a service business, the increased facilities required, primarily the freight terminals and garage buildings, necessarily lagged behind the business being handled. Many factors must be considered before construction is begun.Planning necessarily includes geographical location, adequacy to handle the vehicles that will be assigned for maintenance, design of the building, and the extremely difficult matter of cost. The author's concept of the most efficient garage building is that it be rectangular in shape, have a flat roof, parallel service bays of a standard width with corresponding power-operated overhead doors, space heaters of the self-contained type mounted overhead, storage space located on second floors, and all stationary shop equipment mounted overhead or under the floor. Most important though is the efficient use of all floor space
