Summary:
A concept of cooling passenger and crew compartments for the supersonic transport utilizes air flowing outwardly through the wall insulation to prevent aerodynamic heat from passing through the wall. This cooling principle, called the heat intercept system, has been successfully tested on a full-scale aircraft body section. Aerodynamic heat flow into the cabin can be reduced by 80% when 1.5 lb/hr/sq ft is allowed to pass through the wall under conditions where the outside skin temperature is 500 F. Because of its simplicity, lightweight and reliability, the heat intercept system is ideally suited for application to the SST
