Today, more horsepower is taken out of the modern lighter weight opposed engines which are tightly cowled for streamlining and speed. In return for the advantages gained there are additional responsibilities for the operator to consider, such as more knowledgeable operation of these powerplants and better maintenance than the old low compression radial engines tolerated.In reaching this conclusion, this paper discusses some basic problems in the operation and maintenance of the flat opposed reciprocating aircraft engine. Observations and suggestions from field experience are included, as well as an estimate of future maintenance and operational problems
