Summary:
This paper evaluates and categorizes the thermodynamic and system advantages of the Rankine and Brayton cycles when applied to long-duration (one year) auxiliary space power systems in the 1-35 kw power range. The Rankine cycle offers advantages when high power outputs are to be obtained with relatively small radiator areas. The Brayton cycle, however, has the advantage of reducing developmental problems to an absolute minimum, thereby providing a reliable unit compatible with long system life.The national space effort would be enhanced by complementing the current work on Rankine cycles with the development of a low-power Brayton cycle for applications where radiator area is not the prime consideration
