- Summary:
- This report treats the problem of determining the net incident planetary emission and albedo that a partially obstructed flat plate receives as it translates in a circular orbit. The method presented modifies previously developed numerical techniques by introducing geometrically determined "shadow" factors, which account for the blockage of heat flux by an obstructing plate. The geometrical method is described along with equations which relate shadow factors to elemental planetary radiating or reflecting areas. To illustrate, the method is applied to the NASA Grumman Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. Average orbital blockage factors are determined for the OAO flat skins that are obstructed from earth radiation and albedo by extended solar paddles
