Summary:
Lining friction characteristics and brake structure vibration modes were selected as critical areas to be investigated experimentally in a continuing brake noise investigation. A friction test machine adapted from an industry standard design was constructed to provide friction data in the low range of sliding speeds and at elevated temperatures. The vibration instrumentation employed two methods: proximity pickups and small accelerometers. The latter method proved to be particularly useful. The application of the vibration instrumentation to a case of drum brake squeal is described
