Summary:
This paper discusses the development of a new type of lubricating oil designed to give outstanding performance in mixed fleets powered by modern diesel and gasoline engines. Its versatile performance characteristics were achieved by including as ashless detergent in the additive formulation. Extensive laboratory and field tests demonstrated the superiority of the new lubricant over conventionally compounded Supplement 1 oils under a wide variety of conditions in both diesel and gasoline engines. The oil was also formulated to meet the performance requirements of the MIL-L-2104B specification, as well as car manufacturers' requirements for API Service MS
