Summary:
As compared with the press method for making ring gear, the new ring rolling method described here has made possible a phenomenal saving of at least 4-6 lb of steel per ring gear. At the same time the process has produced a higher quality product by thoroughly working and refining the material, by developing uniform grain flow in the steel, and by allowing easily obtained closer tolerances. Both equipment and operations of the 600 ton forging press and the ring rolling mill are discussed in detail and described graphically
