Summary:
This paper covers the recuperator, a heat exchanger in which heat from the turbine exhaust is transferred across fixed boundaries to the compressor air, in application to turboprop aircraft engines. Reductions in engine part load specific fuel consumption can be realized with a heat exchanger component as part of the engine cycle, the design concept of which must take into consideration lightness of structure, practical dimensions, reliability, and producibility. A presentation is made of developments in lightweight tubular heat exchangers resulting from a program supported by the Bureau of Naval Weapons. Developments in related fields at AiResearch are also discussed
