- Atmospheric air is the most common heat sink used in aircraft air conditioning systems, for both flight and ground operation. In Mach 3 supersonic transports, any air taken aboard will be too hot to be useful as a sink; other sinks will be necessary. In the selection of a sink, consideration should be given to low temperature materials that permit elimination of the thermodynamic refrigeration cycle, such as pre-cooled fuel, low temperature fuel, and ammonia. Precooled fuel offers many advantages. The main disadvantage of this simple, low penalty approach is the requirement for special storage and (or) additional ground equipment
