- Summary:
- The author develops the theory that air transportation by supersonic transports (SST) will remain competitive costwise with surface transportation if: (1) the SST's are used in long-haul operations over good routes, (2) the SST's carry somewhat larger payloads than present jets, and (3) operating costs are proportional to cost/speed ratios of present jets. Charts show the difficulty SST's will have in achieving their speed capabilities. High aircraft utilization becomes hampered by ground turnaround times and scheduling requirements
