- Summary:
- Radioactive tracer tests have been used in the past for experimental work on small size single-cylinder test engines or small, automotive-type engines. This paper discusses the use of such tracers in a full-scale engine to study piston ring wear. The test apparatus is illustrated and test procedure is explained, as are the various factors considered in designing the tests and test equipment. Piston ring wear occurred in two areas: in the top ring and ring groove of the upper piston, and in the second and third grooves of the lower pistons. Wear rate data are presented and analysed
