Summary:
Automatic transmissions have well proved their efficiency and durability, but they are still plagued by the problems of high temperature and fluid compatability with seal materials as well as fluid life. Fluid failure is accountable for most transmission deterioration. This paper discusses effects studied during Pikes Peak tests, bench tests, and ordinary city and expressway driving, with respect to heat resistance of fluid. The author proposes that level and condition indicators could prevent many fluid failures, and he offers suggestions as to how these may be designed
