- Summary:
- This paper describes Systems from three aspects - historical (from Newton and Laplace to the present), philosophical (treating the parallel between the learning process and the systems viewpoint) and practical, in which specific examples of systems are presented. Stressing the mechanical systems arising out of Newtonian dynamics (both because of their success and familiarity to engineers), the similarities and differences between mechanical systems and systems containing people are treated. Although the modern systems analysis view employs concepts, mathematical techniques and terminology of classical mechanics, some new math and some new terminology have been introduced. This is partly the result of "fashion," but is also due to differences in the problems themselves. For example, the most fruitful recent treatments of systems whose performance is influenced by competition have used the concepts and techniques of game theory. Although there has been much progress, systems analysis has far to go before it can claim to treat adequately all of the systems' problems which are being presented to engineers
