Summary:
Proper engineering design involves adequate consideration of all pertinent parameters. This must include normal attrition and life expectancy probability factors and their correlation with the environmental stresses anticipated in intended use. Provision for such considerations in the engineering design program effectively constitutes reliability implementation. However, other factors should not be overlooked. The design parameters involving measurement and fulfillment of required performance during specified periods of operation and the interpretation of such data for prediction purposes are very important. These factors constitute the newly recognized engineering technology of Reliability. This paper illustrates the techniques of data development through statistical reduction methods. It follows with analysis of failure trends and the formulation of derating stress factors. Also considered is the application of reliability relationships through engineering techniques and assurance of reliable design through Design Review
