Summary:
The present status of crash fire prevention in reciprocating engine and jet powered aircraft is reviewed together with the technical aspects of the problem. A study of the prototype system originated by the Kidde Company is presented here and includes a detailed analysis and design summary, techniques of system initiation, and recommendations for improved fire prevention methods. The system described is the outcome of the design study for inerting the General Electric J-79 engine and a breadboard design completed for the Allison 501-D13 engine
