Summary:
THIS paper summarizes a series of experiments to determine the cause of combustion noise in an automotive engine. Results indicate that wild ping is associated with fuel octane number and rumble with surface ignition. Rumble can be reduced by careful selection of base stocks of fuels, although deposit-modifying additives also have a minimizing effect. The author concludes by stating that higher and higher compression ratios will increase the problems of engine noise
