Summary:

THE FOUR 99 is a relatively new powerplant intended for use in cars and light commercial vehicles. It develops 43 bhp at 4000 rpm with a maximum torque of 73 ft-lb at 2200 rpm. It is a 4-cyl, in-line engine with a bore of 3 in. and a stroke of 3.5 in. (99-cu-inches capacity).Performance reports of experience in Europe have been favorable: A Bedford C. A. half-tone van equipped with the engine gave 31.6 mpg when operated over a route that included 115 vehicles starts per day. (A gasoline engine in the same capacity gave 12.5 mpg.)The author describes some of the design problems encountered in the Four 99 development, including noise, vibration, and cold starting
