Summary:
For many years motor truck transmission and axle manufacturers have recommended different lubricants for their respective components. The major transmission makers have recommended mineral oil, while the heavy duty truck axle manufacturers have recommended an EP lubricant. This difference in lubrication specifications has resulted in extensive discussion during recent times as to the feasibility of using a common lubricant for both transmissions and rear axles. The question has prompted the lubrication manufacturers to work in conjunction with both the transmission and rear axle manufacturers in an effort to arrive at adequate requirements for transmission and rear axle lubricants
