Summary:
THE function of the cooling system, Mr. Young emphasizes, is to prevent the engine from reaching a temperature that would cause it to cease operation - not to keep it cool. The slavish adherence to the 140- 180 F jacket water temperature range should be viewed in this light, he says, pointing out that smaller size and lower cost of cooling system and improved engine performance are possible with the use of higher jacket temperatures - say, in the neighborhood of 250 F.
