- Summary:
- ABSTRACT - The first part of this paper will examine the dependencies of the forces and moments in the joint face on working force and distribution of flexural rigidity. In the second part calculation of the connecting rod bolted assembly is carried out with the aid of the sequence of mathematical steps recommended in VDI 2230. The calculated bending stresses have been satisfactorily confirmed by measurement at maximum bearing clearance. In the third part the possible causes of failure of the connecting rod are summarized. Of the five possible causes of failure: lifting in the joint face, transverse displacement at the joint face, exceeding the yield point in the bolt shank, flexural fatigue fracture in the first load bearing screw thread and plastic deformation under compressive stress, the first two are least safe with maximum tightening factor
