- This paper emphasizes the need for compatibility between lubricating oil characteristics and engine design to achieve high reliability goals. General oil characteristics found to be desirable in the General Motors 567 and 645 two-stroke diesel engines are reviewed. Specific examples are presented to illustrate where lube oil-engine design characteristics have presented barriers to achieving high reliability, and as a result, engine design changes were required to achieve new goals of compatibility between lube oil and engine design
