- Laboratory tests on rod seals, piston head seals, and rider rings, in air at temperatures up to 750 F and pressures of 1000 psig at 4 and 15 cpm of a 2 inches stroke, show TFE (glass, carbon and bronze filled) rod and piston head seals are satisfactory with 17-4 PH rods, 347 SS cylinders, 4130 steel rods and cylinders; TFE (glass and carbon filled) to be satisfactory with chrome plated rods and cylinders; glass filled TFE to be satisfactory with anodized aluminum cylinders. Special polymer (polyimide) was satisfactory with 17-4 PH rods, but was unsatisfactory with chrome plated rods and cylinders, anodized aluminum cylinders, 347 SS cylinders, and 4130 steel rods and cylinders. Low alloy pearlitic grey iron (K6E) was unsatisfactory with chrome plated rods and cylinders and 4130 steel rods and cylinders. S-Monel was incompatible with all bare and coated rods and cylinders tested
