Summary:
The cooperative efforts of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) leading to the development of viscometric methods that realistically reflect the low temperature cranking performance of engine oils are discussed. These cooperative studies, undertaken at the request of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), have resulted in the establishment of ASTM D 2602-67T and use of this test method by SAE in revising SAE Recommended Practice (J300a), "Crank-case Oil Viscosity Classification"
